About Us

Brandon Shaffer is a third generation Coloradan, former naval officer, and a candidate for Congress in Colorado's 4th Congressional District.

Here's a little more about Brandon and our campaign:

Brandon attended Denver East High School — the same school that both his mother and grandmother attended. He then put himself through Stanford University with a Navy ROTC scholarship. Brandon graduated from Stanford in 1993 with an honors degree in political science and a focus on education policy.

Upon graduation, Brandon was commissioned into the United States Navy and assigned to the USS Hewitt (DD 966). While stationed aboard the Hewitt, Brandon made two deployments to the Persian Gulf and served as her Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer, First Lieutenant, and Navigator. He left active duty in 1997 and returned to his home state to attend law school at the University of Colorado. He remained a reservist until 2001.

Brandon was first elected to the Colorado General Assembly in 2004 and currently represents Senate District 17, which includes Longmont, Erie, Lafayette, and Louisville. In 2009, Brandon was unanimously elected by his peers to serve as the President of the Senate. Before that, he held several leadership positions including Majority Leader, Assistant Majority Leader, and Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

In the State Senate, Brandon has focused on developing Colorado Solutions to pass several significant bipartisan pieces of legislation including laws ensuring health coverage for children with autism, expanding scholarships for veterans, and making college in Colorado more affordable and accessible. He also spearheaded efforts to construct the Ralph A. Carr Judicial Center and the new Colorado History Museum.

One of his most significant successes came in 2009 when he again used Colorado Solutions to garner support from both sides of the aisle to make Colorado one of only three states to fix its public employee pension system. A reformed Public Employees’ Retirement Association (PERA) means security for the nearly 475,000 senior citizens and PERA members in Colorado.

He has also applied the lessons he learned from his father – standing up for “the little guy” – by taking on corruption and mismanagement in government as he did with Pinnacol Assurance, which was hurting small businesses by wasting their premium dollars.

Finally, while Washington has been busy arguing about how best NOT to pass a budget, Brandon has either crafted or voted for and helped pass a balanced budget every year since he was elected. Whether the Governor was a Democrat or a Republican, Brandon led the way in finding a budget that works for all of Colorado.

Several organizations have recognized Brandon’s legislative accomplishments with awards, including the United Veteran’s Committee of Colorado’s Distinguished Legislator Award [2009], the Colorado Community College System’s Legislator of the Year Award [2010], and the Colorado Association of School Executives’ Policy Leader Award [2011]. In addition to his work in the State Senate, Brandon serves on the Colorado Bar Association Board of Governors and the Uniform State Laws Commission.

Brandon met his wife, Jessicca Shaffer, while in the Navy and stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. She is currently a 5th grade teacher. Brandon and Jessicca live with their children, Dylan (10) and Madison (7), in Longmont, Colorado.
