The mission of the AmeriCorps, Monterey County United for Literacy program is to enable Monterey County children to read well and independently by the end of the third grade so they can read to learn in the fourth grade and beyond. To overcome the poverty- related issues of literacy and ensure students acquire the reading ability essential for academic success, 30 members will provide one-to-one tutoring to a minimum of 575 children in kindergarten through fourth grade in seven schools in Salinas and South Monterey County to help them improve their fluency and comprehension and develop the habit of independent reading. We also participate in several community service activities throughout the year. Examples would be: neighborhood park clean-ups, the California International Airshow, a benefit for local charities, the California Rodeo which also benefits local charities, hosted families with young children for events that include literacy, healthy lifestyle education, and physical activities, and volunteering at the County Science Fair and County Spelling Bee. This is considered a fulltime year of service committment. 1700 hour requirement for completion.
