Description

Human Rights Volunteer/Intern

Human Rights In Africa, many nations have at least recognized basic human rights for all citizens, though in practice these are not always recognized. Extensive human rights abuses still occur in several parts of Africa, often under the oversight of the state. The situation of human rights in Africa and for that matter Ghana is generally reported to be poor, and it is seen as an area of grave concern according to the UN, and non-governmental observers.

The two recognized human rights organizations where we place volunteers/interns are The Human Rights Advocacy Center (HRAC) and Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI). These are independent Human Rights Organizations that seek to provide monitoring and rights of all persons.

The Human Rights Advocacy Center (HRAC) organization's office is based in Accra and is dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights. Through cutting-edge research, education, and advocacy, the organization saves lives, fights injustice, restores peace, and builds the human rights movement around the world. Their areas of activities include; Rule of Law, Access to Justice, Respect of the Constitution, Police Accountability, Children's Rights, Women's Rights and Right to Information. The organization deals with issues of reproductive rights (harmful traditional practices such as female circumcision), issues of rape, child trafficking, assault, unlawful detention and eviction Etc.

The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) is an international and independent body that seeks to provide monitoring and rights to citizens of Africa. The organization's office for Africa is based in Ghana, Accra and is also dedicated to the cause above. Their other areas of activities include; Rule of Law, Access to Justice, Respect of the Constitution, Police Accountability, Children's Rights, Women's Rights and Right to Information.

They carry out work by means of investigation, research, training, publications and capacity building. They collaborate with governments, inter-governmental organizations, academia, students and civil society. They aim to apply human rights to social change initiatives, advancement and improvement of human rights. The courts in Ghana however, ensure a culture of respect for the rights and obligations of all people in Ghana, dispensing and promoting justice in a free, informal, formal and relatively expeditious manner, ensuring fairness, efficiency, transparency and application of best practices.
