Designer

Company Description

At Greater Good Studio, we design programs and services to address some of society’s toughest challenges. From early literacy and child nutrition, to veterans housing and tenants’ rights, our projects tackle issues of poverty and injustice head-on. We believe that the best way to empower clients and communities is to put the design process in their hands, and the best way to create impact is to craft deeply respectful, empathic and user-centered tools and experiences.

Role Description

We are seeking a life-long learner who is passionate about using the tools and mindsets of service design to create a more equitable society. The Designer will bring human-centered approaches to ideation, concept development and definition, and prototyping in order to engage clients and communities in the design process.

A successful candidate is experienced in human-centered design and comfortable working in the social and/or public sectors. Ideally, you bring a diverse toolkit of design skills that can be applied across disciplines in a highly collaborative environment. You work visually and can translate research and ideas into compelling concepts and frameworks.

This is a full-time, permanent staff position based in Chicago, with some (primarily domestic) travel. Our target start date for this role is February 3, 2020.

Responsibilities

  • Envision and sketch new ideas across a wide range of experience types: digital and physical tools, programs and services, spaces and environments, events, campaigns, roles, policies, processes, etc.
  • Create concept communication tools such as storyboards, user experience journeys, and system maps for use in research, synthesis, workshops and prototype testing
  • Translate research and design insights into visual models and frameworks
  • Create prototypes and gather feedback on design concepts from a wide range of audiences
  • Create project deliverables such as wireframes, service blueprints and screen designs
  • Participate in the facilitation of ideation workshops with clients and communities
  • Participate in field research using ethnographic methods such as observation and deep listening
  • Collaborate in a team-based environment with researchers, designers, project leads and clients
  • Contribute to project planning to ensure that service design approaches are well-integrated into broader goals
  • Teach and coach others on human-centered design methods
  • Work on internal initiatives such as policies, procedures, or workflows as needed
  • Participate in internal team-building, contributing to company culture and professional development

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in User-Centered/Experience Design such as Service Design, UX Design and/or Design Thinking
  • Expert presentation, written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with or volunteering within marginalized communities
  • Experience facilitating the design process for others
  • Proficiency in visual design and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Willing to travel for research and client workshops
