Land Steward Position Description


The purpose of this position is to provide good land stewardship for a 600-acre natural heavily forested property in upstate New York near Woodstock. The goal is to ensure that wildlife and habitat are well managed and that any illegal activities such as poaching are prevented. Habitat restoration of wetlands and reforestation will be required. This is an ideal position for someone who enjoys work outdoors and has an interest in wildlife and nature conservation.

Qualifications include:

  • Live within 20 miles property or ideally on site- accommodation is available on the property
  • Be able to drive with valid driver’s license
  • Be willing to make a 2  year commitment
  • Be mentally and physically able to perform stewardship responsibilities including working outside in all four seasons.
  • Have a strong interest in forest ecology and wildlife conservation and management.
  • Have a strong work ethic and organizational abilities, “can do” problem-solving attitude
  • Good social skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Non-smoker, non-hunter
  • Working knowledge of land conservation principles and familiarity with federal and state land conservation rules
  • A university degree in a related topic such as biology, ecology, wildlife management is a plus but not an absolute necessity.
  • The love of Nature is an absolute requirement

Salary and Benefits

·      Salary commensurate with experience

·      5 days paid vacation for the first year and 10 days paid vacation for the second year.

·      Benefits include medical insurance




General Responsibilities

  • Monitor and patrol the property thoroughly on a regular schedule, rain or shine, year round
  •  Manage wildlife and restoration of the land.
  • Maintain gates, signs, trails, and other related to devices, for example camera traps or trail cameras
  • Perform wildlife habitat improvement, where appropriate.
  • Remove trash and debris from the property.
  • Walk property boundaries to identify encroachments and/or maintenance needs.
  • Act as liaison with local officials, neighbors, conservation organizations regarding land stewardship and conservation activities
  • Document and report illegal activity such as poaching to appropriate authorities
  • Formulate an annual land stewardship plan for review by owner
  • Create a bullet point monthly report summarizing any significant issues, results, and items of interest in the land stewardship program

Specific Duties and Projects

·      Restore a wetland that was drained by previous owners by re-flooding through elimination of drainage ditches

·      Install a camera trap network to monitor illegal activity as well as document wildlife presence

·      Develop a perimeter patrol trail system

·      Work with NYS Department of Environment to obtain any required permits for restoration and wildlife management activities.
