Community Health Service Learning With Lori's Hands in Baltimore

Lori's Hands student volunteers from colleges in Baltimore, provide in-home support to people with chronic illnesses like cancer, MS, Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS), and heart failure. While the students assist with grocery shopping, yard work and other tasks made difficult by disease, recipients provide valuable insights into the human experience of chronic illness.

We do ask for a commitment to go on visits once a week, which typically last about an hour long. By going on consistent visits, it is a great way to build a meaningful relationship that lasts a lifetime. In response to COVID-19 we’ve temporarily transitioned to virtual and contactless visits. Our students and clients are engaging in conversation through weekly phone and video calls. Our students are also assisting their clients with online grocery ordering and navigating community resources. In some cases, students are able to offer contactless grocery drop-offs and assist with other activities from a distance. We are using our Sunny Day Fund to help clients pay for services to address unmet needs (e.g. assisting with the cost of meal delivery). We also continue to engage hundreds of volunteers in our Green Ribbons Pen Pals program, as an additional way to foster connection.
