Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) is a transnational feminist solidarity network that promotes human rights and gender justice and equality for people whose lives are shaped, conditioned or governed by patriarchal and/or authoritarian interpretations of Islam. For over thirty-five years, WLUML has worked with feminist movements to break isolation and build our collective power.

This Communications volunteer position with WLUML will help to advance the network’s core activities and campaigns through social media, media relations, and content development. WLUML is looking to invite young up-and-coming women’s rights activists or those interested in gaining more insight into women’s rights work to apply. The volunteer will develop skills and gain real-world experience as part of a passionate and engaged team, while supporting the activism of rights advocates around the world in WLUML’s international network. 

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Assist with development of content for Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, including infographics and web-based graphics.
  • Assist in regular updating of WLUML’s website with multimedia content.
  • Tracking our social media and website engagement through tools such as Google Analytics, Meltwater, TweetDeck, etc.
  • Monitoring social media and news channels to keep a pulse on key actions and developments.
  • Brainstorming ideas and conducting research for new campaigns and initiatives with the opportunity to contribute copy and visual assets.
  • Updating, maintaining and optimizing the WLUML listserv, which currently hosts over 400 members comprising activists, journalists, researchers, etc.  
  • Assist in updating and maintaining the network’s database.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • School or work experience in communications, multimedia, journalism, or publishing and editorial
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with team members
  • Technical skills in website development, graphic design, and social media
  • Strong communicator with excellent writing and analytical skills
  • Passion for gender justice and women’s rights
  • An understanding of current issues affecting women’s rights, particularly those living under Muslim laws
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and to work flexibly
  • Individuals with second or third language skills (particularly Arabic, Farsi, Pashto, French and/or Urdu) are especially encouraged to apply. 

Duration: 4 months, with potential to renew

Location: Remote

Number of hours: 10 hours per week (flexible)

We will cover incidental fees, and are open to sponsoring fellowships.
