As Coordinator–Africa, you will curate content relating to  African human rights organizations, law resources and nonviolent activism tools for addition to our resource library. You will assist in highlighting ongoing human rights issues in the African region, free trainings on human rights and nonviolent activism, and resources available for human rights defenders (HRD’s) in Africa. You will also support our organization’s efforts to network with other rights and nonviolent activism focused groups, coalitions and organizations in Africa. 

The aim of this position is to help  HRD’s and movements  access information about strategic nonviolent activism and the human rights legal framework in Africa. In this role, you will work closely with the Regional Lead for Africa.

As with all of our positions, the role is volunteer-based and unpaid. Human Rights Connected’s (HRC) team works remotely, and members are required to attend scheduled team and one-on-one meetings. Candidates must be able to work independently, take initiative and pursue creative approaches to problem solving. Candidates from Central, North, East or South Africa are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  1. Curate practical human rights and nonviolent activism-related resources relevant/specific to Africa for addition to HRC’s Organizations Index, Law Library and Activist Toolkit. 
  2. Monitor and highlight human rights and nonviolent activism related developments in Africa- .
  3. Identify and network with human rights and non-violent activism- focused organizations and individuals in Africa.
  4. Conduct assessments of the unit’s work and compile reports on it when necessary.
  5. With the social media team, work on campaigns that feature the African resources within HRC’s resource library.                                
  6. With the Education and Communications team, assist in developing short blog posts which feature African organizations and resources in the HRC library.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Basic understanding of the human rights and nonviolent activism spaces in Africa.
  • Excellent legal research skills. 
  • Adept at digital and on-the-ground networking
  • Ability to work strategically, and carry out basic in-unit monitoring to ensure the unit's goals are met.
  • Ability to work remotely.
  • English proficiency mandatory, multilingual capability required.
