After-School Tutor (Fall 2021)

As an After-School Tutor, you will guide the success of our 7th grade students by supporting them at one of our sites in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or the Bronx.


  • Bronx Site: Aquinas High School (685 E 182nd St, The Bronx, NY 10457)
  • Brooklyn Site: Liberty Avenue Middle School (350 Linwood Street, Brooklyn, NY 11208)
  • Manhattan Site: The Town School (540 East 76th Street, New York, NY 10021)


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working with a small group of 7th grade students on Mondays and/or Wednesdays from 4:15PM-6:30PM EST in our after-school program, supported by the Program Manager
  • Providing support with homework completion, academic tutoring, and programming activities
  • Facilitate BTNY-provided Tutor Curriculum
  • Conducting regular check-ins with your Program Manager
  • Completing Weekly Tutor Reports (10 minutes/week)
  • Other duties based on the BTNY site at which you are assigned


WE’RE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO:

  • Is passionate about forming relationships with middle school students, while acting as a role model at all times
  • Has a solid understanding of middle school academic content (literature, writing, math, science, etc.)
  • Is a high school senior or a undergraduate student
  • Can commit to the entire Fall 2021 Term (September 13th – December 8th)
  • Is confident with Zoom, Google Drive, and comfortable learning new systems
  • Demonstrates excellence in BTNY’s Core Values, and practices:
  • Efficiency: Produces significant output with minimal wasted effort
  • Prioritization: Balances tasks and makes the right judgment call
  • Critical and Reflective Thinking: Draws insightful conclusions from data and feedback
  • Attention to Detail: Identifies the important details, ensuring they do not slip through the cracks or derails project
  • Effective Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and articulately, adjusts for audience as appropriate
  • Leadership and Ownership: Understands their role as a leader on any project and team, resulting in successful outcomes regardless of their title or role using a “whatever it takes” attitude


BREAKTHROUGH POINTS IF YOU:

  • Are a current BTNY 12th Grader or College Student 
  • Have taught or worked at a Breakthrough site previously


TENTATIVE CALENDAR:

  • Tutor Training (from 4:15 to 6:30PM EST, in-person/hybrid/remote format to be determined)
  • Monday, September 13th
  • Wednesday, September 15th
  • Wednesday, September 22nd 
  • Programming Dates
  • Programming begins September 27th and ends December 8th
  • Hybrid programming on September 27th & 29th, with in-person programming to begin on October 1st (tentatively)
  • Mondays and/or Wednesdays from 4:15 to 6:30PM
  • Between Programming Dates:
  • Completing Tutor Reports on a weekly basis


COMPENSATION: 

The Tutor role at BTNY is an unpaid volunteer role.


COVID-19 Vaccination:

While this role may begin remotely, BTNY anticipates returning to a hybrid work environment in mid-September 2021. BTNY will require all employees and ongoing-volunteers with in-person role responsibilities to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to the start of their in-person role. That specific vaccination deadline will be communicated directly to candidates during the interview process. Candidates in need of an exemption from this policy due to a medical reason or because of a sincerely held religious belief must submit a request for accommodation as soon as possible after an offer has been made."
