About the Role:
The COVID-19 crisis has pushed school districts across the Commonwealth to adopt virtual learning as a key tool for the 2020-2021 school year. Many districts are starting the year virtually, are virtual one or several days a week, or will eventually go virtual. Children need supervision for their safety as well as learning support as they make their way through virtual lessons and unstructured parts of the day.
Absent supportive adult supervision, young children risk falling behind on key educational benchmarks as well as social and emotional development. At the same time, child care programs for children ages 0-5 are on the brink of closure because of staffing shortages. Parents who do not have the option of working virtually and/or are wage employees, rather than salaried, are left with an impossible situation, struggling to find adequate support and supervision for their children without risking their family’s financial position. These families are overwhelmingly likely to live in communities that have experienced the heaviest impact from COVID-19 and work in jobs with the highest risk of exposure to the virus.
In partnership with Neighborhood Villages, we are working to create an emergency cohort of AmeriCorps members who can staff partner sites in need of additional resources to meet the 2020-2021 school year needs.
