Throughout the project period, the Summer Associate will develop various materials including reports, data and statistics from research, and strategies to build capacity in other DPW offices and city agencies in relation to equity. Another key goal will be the development of a user-friendly system to track each one’s progress to ensure that they are aligned and meeting the expected standards. Towards the end of service, they’ll devise solutions on how they can best be met or improved upon in the future. VISTAs will also work with the Grants Office and other DPW VISTAs involved in grant-making/fundraising to research funding opportunities and provide data/past research for applications, primarily for projects that revolve around inequality in urban areas, environmental injustice, and underserved communities.

Summer Associates will specifically target low-income, underserved communities as well as minority populations in the Baltimore area through the development of various capacity building programs related to equity. Baltimore City has suffered long with sustained rates of poverty, discrimination, and environmental racism, all of which we still see today and will continue to affect future generations without intervention. Projects carried out by staff and with help from VISTAs will focus on combatting environmental injustice and racial inequality in the city and work to construct programs that raise awareness in other city agencies about how they can improve processes and programming to address those inequities.
