The Treasurer plays a critical role on UNA-Chicago’s board and is a member of the Executive Committee. This role ensures the chapter’s fiscal responsibility by advising on strategic revenue growth, maintaining all financial records in compliance with applicable laws, and proactively monitoring and communicating operational income and losses with the board. The Treasurer serves as the gatekeeper for the overall financial viability of the chapter by ensuring programming costs are aligned with budget restrictions as outlined in the beginning of the year. 

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Manages the board's review of, and action related to, the board's financial responsibilities. He/She/They will work directly with board members in developing and implementing appropriate program budgets, financial procedures, and systems. 
  • Presents the annual budget to the board for approval 
  • Prepares appropriate financial reports which are made available to board prior to meetings &  regularly reports at board meetings on UNA-Chicago finances (e.g. actual versus budget, areas of surplus, budget restrictions, operational funds) and ensures all board members understand the financial landscape of the chapter 
  • Creates and educates board and volunteers on UNA-Chicago standard operating procedures  pertaining to organization finances (Policies on Purchase order forms, reimbursement forms) 
  • Is the Chapter’s interface with the chapter’s Banking Institution (Bank of America) and maintains UNA-Chicago’s account ledger (checking account) and all financial records, including providing oversight for all banking, events, and fundraising activities 
  • The Treasurer keeps regular contact with the National Office to ensure compliance with internal and Federal compliance standards. Specifically, the Treasurer is expected to file an annual IRS  Form 990 no later than May 15th of each year (noting that a chapter’s fiscal year ends on 12/31). 
  • Responsible for timely and accurate filing of all applicable forms to the State and Federal entities and what information is required by the National Office in order to avoid fines, the revocation of  the Chapter’s 501 (c)(3) status and/or, as appropriate, its registration as a charitable organization for fundraising purposes. 
  • Willingness to work with and train volunteers for special program budget reporting
  • Submits weekly updates as necessary and appropriate
  • Submits a timely and complete Accounting Report prior to each board meeting
