Pionero Philanthropy is a nonprofit assessment organization that provides verified information about the Guatemalan nonprofit environment for stakeholders to access online and via consultancy services. 

Our mission is to bridge the gap between grassroots Guatemalan nonprofits, donors, and information seekers around the globe in order to facilitate long-lasting and positive change.  We believe that reliable information leads to more effective giving and that together we can create a brighter future for Guatemalan communities.

Pionero hosts the first and only comprehensive Guatemalan Nonprofit Database (containing almost 9000 organizations) which is visualized through an interactive map on its website. Our strengths lie in our on the ground expertise and relationships with our growing database of partner nonprofits who have been evaluated using a robust and academically supported 5 Pillar Methodology. 

Pionero Philanthropy commenced operations in 2018 and received US 501c3 status in 2019. All staff are based in Guatemala and the organization is seeking a larger, active and committed board to engage the US audience in order for Pionero Philanthropy to become more impactful and financially sustainable.


Specific Skills Needed:

Pionero Philanthropy is seeking board members with 1 or more of the following skill sets:

GRANTS DEVELOPMENT - identification and connecting to grants and funders who have the vision to see the potential of Pionero Philanthropy as a stimulator for development in Guatemala and the wider Northern Triangle Region.

ACADEMIC & RESEARCH PARTNERSHIPS -identification and approach of Research funding and partnerships with Academic Institutions such as Universities and Research Bodies in order to fully utilize the vast data collected by Pionero Philanthropy

SALES - identification and approach of potential clients of Pionero Philanthropy’s data on the Guatemala nonprofit sector and demography. Potential clients could include Embassies, large nonprofit organizations, Foundations, High Net Worth Individuals, and academics. These clients could also require consultancy services.

LEGAL - A thorough knowledge of the legal frameworks in place for 501c3 organizations

SEO / MARKETING / PR - knowledge and expertise in SEO, digital marketing and/or PR to ensure Pionero Philanthropy is getting the public attention it needs from clients, funders and those seeking to support our mission.


Person Specification:

EXPERIENCE

  • Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership 
  • Evidence of successfully working in a leadership or governance role (through work or volunteer experience)
  • Experience of successfully dealing with strategic issues, including interpretation of complex information 
  • Experience of developing a culture that meets the needs of clients, staff and stakeholders
  • Awareness of the systems and structures in, and issues affecting Philanthropy, Nonprofits, Development and/or Central America
  • Accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector 


SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to command confidence with the acumen to develop productive relationships varied stakeholders
  • Sound judgement and ability to think strategically; ability to handle competing priorities and make informed decisions
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to relate to people at all levels (Spanish Skills are desirable)

Responsibilities & Expectations:

As the highest leadership body of the organization, it is responsible for:

  • Fundraising and Resource development - Annual financial contribution to the organization through donation or commitment to fundraising.
  • Fully engaging, identifying and securing resources and partnerships for the organization to advance its mission
  • Leveraging connections, networks, and resources to achieve the organization’s mission and benefit its fundraising, image, and reputational standing.
  • Determining the mission and purposes of the organization
  • Commiting to Pionero Philanthropy’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience 
  • Selecting and Evaluating the performance of the Chief Executive Officer
  • Strategic and Organizational planning
  • Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management
  • Approving and monitoring the organization’s programs and services
  • Assessing the board’s own performance as the governing body of the organization
  • Following the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions
  • Signing an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and disclose potential conflicts when they arise
  • Maintaining confidentiality about all internal organization matters
  • Making a time and energy commitment and be willing to attend and actively participate in Board meetings 


Service on the Board is without remuneration, except for administrative support and travel costs in relation to Members’ duties. 


Board Members will serve a 3 year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term.
