During a typical school year, SitStayRead brings volunteers and their dogs into K-3 classrooms throughout Chicago. Our curriculum is designed to support critical literacy skills at each grade level. Volunteers usually choose if they are interested in becoming a Book Buddy (volunteering without a dog) or a Dog Team (volunteering with their Certified Reading Assistance Dog).
The uncertainties of Covid definitely changed the school year and made it anything but typical; our volunteer roles look a little different this time around! With all of the adjustments and changes, we still have volunteer opportunities available for folks with and without pets, and we want passionate people like you to fill these roles.
Here are some of the roles we currently have available:
Associate Board: a more hands-on approach to support SitStayRead
Encouragement Cards: fun and easy way to show students we are proud of their hard work
SitStayRead-Aloud videos: submit videos of yourself reading your favorite childhood book or poem
SitStayRead Remote Learning Program: become involved with the development of our Remote-Learning Program
SitStayRead+ Virtual Visits: visit our students live in their virtual classrooms
Our team at SitStayRead is dedicated to creating a diverse and pluralistic cultural environment. Our goal is to recruit volunteers that reflect the students we serve. With that goal in mind, we invite individuals that identify as BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ to apply and join our organization! Bilingual English/Spanish is highly recommended.
