Volunteer as a Book Reviewer for the Award-Winning Real Change Newspaper!

Real Change is searching for volunteer book reviewers who are interested in contributing their talents to our weekly, award-winning newspaper! Founded in 1994, Real Change is a nonprofit that provides an immediate employment opportunity to homeless and low-income individuals throughout the Pacific Northwest. Highly regarded as the leading street newspaper in North America, the content of the Real Change Newspaper unwaveringly focuses on, and takes action for, racial, social, and economic justice.

This position is completely virtual, with no in-office work required. Please see below for details:

  • Position Title: Real Change Volunteer Book Reviewer
  • Location: Remote. This work can be completed from any location, and all communication with your supervisor can be via email, telephone, or zoom, if needed. Books are usually available as PDFs; physical copies can be mailed or picked up at the office as requested.
  • Supervisor: Henry Behrens
  • Position Description: Real Change seeks reading enthusiasts to write high-quality book reviews to be published in the Real Change Newspaper. If you love to read and enjoy introducing books to others, this could be the perfect role for you! We try to feature recent releases that are newsworthy or otherwise align with Real Change’s mission and values. Nonfiction and fiction book reviews are welcome, as are reviews of poetry and potentially other forms of media (TV shows, movies, podcasts, etc.) after submitting a traditional book review.
  • Time Commitment: Volunteers can complete book reviews as often as monthly or less- including once per year (as long as your deadlines are met). Time spent depends on individuals, but typical tasks include reading the book, writing the first draft, responding to edits, and creating a final draft. Book reviews should be between 800 and 1,200 words.
  • Qualifications:
  • Skills in writing, analytics and media criticism
  • Willingness to take edits and work within Real Change’s style
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Responsive and able to reply to emails within approximately 24 hours

If you're interested in contributing book reviews to Real Change, please reply to this post, or email volunteer@realchangenews.org with 1-3 examples of journalistic, non-fiction writing that is approximately 800 to 1,200 words in length. Writing examples that include reviews are preferable.

Real Change is a 501(3)(c) nonprofit. Poverty and homelessness disproportionately affect people of color, which is reflected in the population of Real Change vendors. We value and strive to support all contributors, regardless of their race, ethnicity, immigration status, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, marital status, age, physical ability, political affiliation, religion and any other non-merit factor.
