School Redesign Fellow AmeriCorps VISTA for DC Public Schools

Position Description:

With a strong record of developing reciprocal, respectful, active, and democratic partnerships, George Washington University (GW) in downtown Washington DC is seeking a VISTA to serve as a School Redesign Fellow for DC Public Schools (DCPS). This is a one year, renewable, position in which the VISTA will work with DCPS Partnerships and Design team in the Office of School Improvement and Supports (OSIS), which aims to develop educational opportunities for at-risk populations through the development of new research, identification of best practices, and creation of new tools. The VISTA’s activities will increase the support provided to OSIS, external organizations, and schools in developing and managing community-driven school models. This is a full-time, 12 month service term with the GW/DCPS AmeriCorps VISTA Program. The project term is based on the start date.

Benefits for Members: 

Benefits include a monthly living allowance of $1,583 (before taxes), health coverage, child care assistance, relocation reimbursement, deferral or forbearance of school loan repayments, personal and medical leave, potential eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit, and reimbursement for some other work-related travel expenses. At the completion of your one year term of service you will receive an education award ($6,345) or stipend ($1,800). You will also receive regular support, training, the chance to collaborate with other VISTAs in the program, and the unique benefits and opportunities of living and working with GW’s Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service inWashington, D.C.

A successful School Redesign VISTA will have:

  • Ability to work effectively in an urban school environment with teachers, school administrators, parents and students
  • Knowledge and experience with data collection and analysis
  • Ability to create innovative solutions to address problems faced in under-resourced schools
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and achieve goals
  • Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders, building relationships to help inform DCPS’s evidence-based practices


Primary responsibilities: 

The successful VISTA will:

  • Develop sustainable systems and structures for ongoing collection of feedback from a variety of stakeholders
  • Collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative feedback to help inform the iteration of school models
  • Develop communications to support school outreach to community at large
  • Co-create community events that focus on the Redesign school models


Project goals and outcomes

It is projected that the following impacts will accrue from the program:

  • Increase capacity of the DCPS Partnerships and Design team in the Office of School Improvement and Supports
  • Engage with students, staff, and community members to rebuild trust and support the refinement of the Redesign school model
  • Support data-driven decision making to refine the Redesign school models at Anacostia and Ballou HS


Special skills and knowledge: 

The candidate should possess the following skills to meet the responsibilities, goals, and outcomes of this position:

  • Database creation and management skills
  • Data collection and analysis experience especially using Excel
  • Ability to translate findings from data into practical guidance for stakeholders
  • Ability to develop professional, user-friendly communications for stakeholders


Terms of Service: 

VISTA must be at least 18-years-old and hold a Bachelor’s degree; be U.S. citizens, nationals, or legal residents; and successfully complete criminal background checks. VISTA is a full-time, 12-month commitment. They are expected to be on call at all times, but typically work a 40-hour week. VISTA member positions are granted by the US government and are subject to certain federal rules and benefits .
