Organization: The DREAM Program

Role: Vermont Based Board Member

The DREAM Program, Inc., a youth mentoring program, is seeking a Vermont based member for our Board of Directors to help provide organizational oversight and support for our established Vermont programs and piloted high school program sites.

Join this enthusiastic, fun, and committed Board and become part of its strategic planning, policy governance, and efforts to grow nationally. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.

The Role

A board member will serve as part of the DREAM Board of Directors’ Vermont Committee, helping to steer local and national-level conversations about the present and future of the organization. Furthermore, the member is expected to meet as part of a specific committee (Policy, Teaching & Learning, Finance, or Engagement) at the national level.

Time Commitment: Board Members are responsible for...

  • Attend a 1.5-hour Regional Committee meeting once a quarter
  • Participate in at least one committee or subcommittee of the National Board
  • Attend quarterly National Board meetings and an annual retreat. Participate in fundraising events and communicate DREAM's mission to a larger audience

Financial Obligation: While DREAM does not have a mandated financial threshold for contributions by Board members, it is anticipated that members will make at least minimal contributions according to their means. It is also expected that Board members will assist DREAM, as appropriate, in publicizing DREAM and soliciting others to contribute.

About You/Qualifications

You are thoughtful, compassionate, and care about impacting the lives of others in a deep and meaningful way. You seek ways to empower the people around you. You take initiative with projects that you care about. You are presently and/or aspire to be a leader, and excel at organizing documents, systems, and people to effect positive change.

Ideally, you have experience working with other nonprofits, nonprofit boards, or in a relevant field, but this is not required—your passion and desire to work with this amazing organization is paramount. Familiarity with or location in the Vermont, Boston, or Philadelphia area would be helpful but is not necessary, as most of our national meetings happen via video conference. (Note: Our annual retreat will be in the Northeast.)

How to Apply

Please email boardchair@dreamprogram.org with a resume.

About DREAM

Founded in 1999 by students at Dartmouth College, DREAM has grown to work with nearly 20 colleges and affordable housing developments throughout Vermont, Boston, and Philadelphia. DREAM’s local program sites (groups of college students mentoring children from an affordable housing community) are the heart of the organization. Our mentoring relationships empower children to lead healthy, fulfilling, productive lives.

Participants in DREAM have access to a variety of experiences, including:

  • Weekly one-on-one and group mentoring
  • Summer adventures and activities in and around their communities
  • Summer and winter programming through our Adventure Programming initiatives (varies by location)
  • Local and regional end-of-semester adventure trips (Culminating Experiences)

Our programs are driven by empowerment, with youth and mentors collaborating to create fun and rewarding activities. DREAM hosts a mix of group and one-on-one mentoring that centers around the mentees’ community. Mentors and mentees plan their activities together, and our unique program design cultivates decision-making and leadership skills among mentors and youth.

About the Board of Directors

The National Board provides oversight and support for DREAM’s three regions: Philadelphia; Burlington, VT; and Boston; and the regional committees that help to govern each region.

As a policy governance board (Google “Carver model” to learn more), the Board develops policies that help define the ultimate goals and operational parameters for DREAM. We also serve as the link to stakeholders (or the “ownership,” according to the Carver model) of the organization, including children, families, mentors, staff, alumni, and community.
