We are a small nonprofit, whose sole mission is to feed hungry students for the weekend. In the Seattle Public School District there are 52,000 students in 98 schools. Out of that 24,000 qualify for free and reduced lunch. Out of that, almost 4000 are identified as homeless through the Mckinney Vento Federal Act which qualifies them as having no adequate nighttime residence. They are on the street, car, shelter, hotel, or doubled up. We are now serving the Renton School District as well.
For many of those MKV students, they rely solely on the food at school, so from Friday lunch to Monday breakfast it's a long time. We hope to fix that with a weekend hunger bag that has 13 items for them to take home and eat for the weekend, filling a belly which would have gone empty.
We are currently serving 2200 students at 68+ schools, in 4 districts We hope to grow so that no MKV student goes unserved.
We back bags every Thursday (following the school dist calendar) in our warehouse on 1st ave so between tmobile park and krispy kreme.
If you are interested in being a driver, you would show up at a designated time, between 9:00-11am
Start in our parking lot, then wait your turn to get rotated into queue on site.
Sometimes it’s always the same, and sometimes you move around, based on volunteer schedules.
Each week I send drive times so you know when to arrive. We have schools north by Children’s Hospital, to South by Ikea.
You could be assigned anywhere in between.
We load your car with 1-20 crates (depending on your car size, or route) and you head out.
Once you get there, you unload, and grab any empty crates, and circle back to me.
Unload and call it a day.
It’s usually less than a 2 hour process.
Please let me know if you are interested in signing up, what kind of car you drive and email me the date you like to start.
I email you weekly for you to confirm you are coming and base the routes on the responses.
Thank you so much for being interested in helping hungry children in need!
Let me know if you have any questions.
