Position Summary

This AmeriCorps Supplementary Intervention Specialist bridges classroom instruction in order to support a student’s ability to read, write, speak, and listen in English which provides the student with meaningful access to Alief ISD’s ESL program. This Member works with 12-18 students per campus per day over the course of the school year via push-in interventions 1:1 or in push-out small groups no larger than three.

The Supplementary Intervention Specialist has a specific interest in teaching that impacts the lives of recent immigrants and/or refugees applying concepts of service learning and acculturation to maximize the learning experience of the students being served. This Member will lead students in two community service projects during the school year.


Essential Functions

AmeriCorps Member Supplementary Intervention Specialists serve a minimum of 1200 hours in a 10 month term of service from September 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021. This Member serves an average of 35 hours per week which includes training, service hours and professional development.


Serving middle school students, the Member serves on two different Alief ISD campuses alternating days at each.


Serving high school students, the Member is assigned to the same high school campus each day.


Engages with 12-18 students per campus per day either 1:1 via a push-in intervention or in small groups of three.


Provides supplementary support in English or Spanish for bilingual and/or ESL program students needing intervention.

Meets with teachers to plan and implement supplementary interventions.


Ensures understanding and comprehension for ESL students to complete classroom activities successfully.


Fosters a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment to encourage English language development, enhances motivation, and clearly communicate classroom routines and expectations.


Maintains complete and accurate records of student’s progress.


Informs classroom teachers of students’ progress.


Leads students in two community service programs throughout the year.


Marginal Functions

Support school events, as long as these activities are within the AmeriCorps guidelines and do not take away time from the essential functions of the Member service position.


Members may be required to perform other position-related instructions within the scope of their normal service activities, as requested by their Supervisor, in alignment with the terms and conditions of the AmeriCorps grant, and subject to reasonable accommodation.



Working Relationships

Members are expected to interface professionally, ethically, cooperatively, productively and effectively with the Youth Services Coordinator, site supervisor, teachers on the Alief ISD campuses where they serve, as well as with the students with whom they are engaged.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Bilingual English/Spanish preferred

Academic, Training and Experience Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or ongoing studies and comparable work experience in that can be applied to the requirements of this position.


Service Conditions

Service takes place at ASPIRE Center and may include home visits.


Must be a U.S. Citizen or be a permanent resident.


Enrollment in the program is contingent on the results of a National Service Criminal History Check that includes FBI fingerprinting and national record check, National Sex Offender Registry, and state criminal background check.


Physical, Emotional, and Intellectual Demands

Physical demands are similar to those of a school teacher.


Professionalism, patience and forbearance are required because members must work with people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives, supporting children with both academic and social challenges.


The intellectual demands include capacity for research, knowledge of the material, and an ability to assess needs and determine the necessary response.

Special Conditions of Service

The position has recurring access to vulnerable populations


ATTIRE

The Member is required to wear appropriate attire including the AmeriCorps Logo at all times during service hours.


SERVICE SITE CHANGES

Disasters such as hurricanes, floods, epidemics or other emergencies may necessitate service be provided remotely or virtually using cellular or internet platforms.


DISASTER REQUIREMENT

In the event of a local, state, or federal disaster declaration, AmeriCorps members may be asked on a volunteer basis or be required by OneStar to activate to assist in disaster response and recovery activities within their communities. This may involve virtual service opportunities or in-person service opportunities. This may include service opportunities outside of the member’s standard service hours or in place of their standard service duties. In the event of a large-scale, high needs local, state, or federal disaster, AmeriCorps members may voluntarily or be required by OneStar to deploy to an area outside of their service area to assist in disaster response and recovery activities.
