About Big Brothers Big Sisters
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest, and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. We create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. Founded in 1968, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Butler County, Ohio serves hundreds of children and youth each year through our mentoring programs in communities throughout Butler County. Youth who are matched with a mentor improve their academic performance, develop a healthier sense of self, adopt healthy attitudes regarding risky behaviors, and improve their relationships with family and peers.
About Sports Buddies
Sports Buddies is a community-based mentoring program that matches adults with children and youth who have a shared interest in sports, fitness, or just being active. Sports and fitness have the capacity to unite and connect individuals and communities in positive and healthy ways. We are seeking mentors ("Bigs") who are willing to share their love of sports with a young person (a "Little") as a means of developing an authentic, supportive, and encouraging relationship that will help that Little realize their potential.
In the Sports Buddies program, Bigs and Littles meet twice per month, engaging in a free or low-cost activity they both enjoy at a time that is mutually convenient. Periodically, you and your Little will be invited to participate in an outing organized by Big Brothers Big Sisters in which you, your Little, and other Sports Buddies participants will attend or participate in a sporting event.
Please note: during the COVID-19 pandemic, outings to sporting events may not be possible, and one-on-one meetings with your Little may occur virtually rather than in-person. Program activities will resume as normal once the pandemic has passed. In the short-term, you must be capable and comfortable meeting with your Little virtually.
Sports Buddies mentors (Bigs) must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license and automobile insurance. All interested volunteers must complete an application, supply references, successfully complete a criminal background check and driving records check, and be interviewed by one of our Enrollment Specialists. Big Brothers Big Sisters reserves the right to refuse any applicant in the best interests of our agency, our programs, and the youth we serve.
You do not have to be an athlete or to have participated in organized sports at any level in order to be a Sports Buddies mentor. Please note that while women are welcome to apply, this volunteer opportunity is primarily targeted toward men, as we have a waiting list of male youth.
You must be able to meet with your Little at least twice per month, for 2 to 4 hours at a time. All volunteers are asked to commit to at least 1 year of service in order to promote the development of a positive mentoring relationship that is of the greatest benefit to the youth we serve.
