Board Member, EcoWomen National

Ecowomen is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to creating a just and equal world by empowering women to be leaders in their professions and stewards of the environment. We value meaningful connections within a diverse and inclusive community to cultivate a more respectful and nurturing society.

We are posting this open call for new national board members who are committed to advancing our focal areas of women, the environment, and education. This is a unique opportunity for an individual who is passionate about EcoWomen’s mission and who has a track record of professional leadership.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Professional experience with leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector
  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and building consensus among diverse individuals
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and honesty

The Board will support the work of EcoWomen chapters and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance at the national level. EcoWomen is run entirely by volunteers, which makes the involvement of our Board leadership both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

Leadership, governance and oversight

  • Contribute to the creation and implementation of EcoWomen’s strategic plan
  • Review outcomes and metrics created by EcoWomen for evaluating its impact and effectiveness in carrying out the organization’s mission; regularly measure its performance and effectiveness using those metrics
  • Provide guidance, oversight, and financial support to EcoWomen chapters
  • Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings
  • Approve EcoWomen’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Identify and recruit other Board Members
  • Serve on committees or task forces and take on special assignments
  • Represent EcoWomen to stakeholders; act as an ambassador for the organization
  • Ensure EcoWomen’s commitment to a diverse board that reflects the communities EcoWomen serves

EcoWomen is committed to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for all members and volunteers. Applicants from backgrounds that have been historically undervalued in the environmental field are encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

EcoWomen Board Members will serve a two-year term and will be eligible for re-appointment for two additional terms.

EcoWomen Board Members will consider EcoWomen a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that EcoWomen can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, EcoWomen expects to have 100 percent of Board Members either make a personal contribution or raise equivalent funds. There are several paths to achieve this goal, however, so applicants should not consider fund availability as a barrier to applying.

Board meetings are held on a monthly basis with one meeting per year being in-person for a full-day retreat.

Service on EcoWomen’s Board of Directors is without remuneration.

We look forward to hearing from you!
