Are you passionate about the six R's of Zero Waste?

Do you enjoy helping others learn how to reduce waste and Recycle Right?

Then this program is for you! You will emerge a community champion of all things related to waste and recycling! Gain the knowledge and confidence to educate and empower friends, neighbors, schools, businesses, and more to waste less, rethink habits, and Recycle Right! Use your new knowledge to advocate for and inspire change in your community.

As a Master Recycler Volunteer, you will educate the community on waste reduction-related topics, including recycling and food scrap diversion, source reduction, circular economy, and "wish"-cycling, with the goal of keeping waste out of the City landfill.

    Program commitments:

Participants must commit to seven in-person classes and 20 hours of volunteer service in their first year.

    Tasks include:

Staffing an information table, operating activities/games, waste station educators, and event involvement. Volunteers are encouraged to create their own opportunities (with the support of City staff) to educate folks in their own circles/communities.

    Skills needed are:

Comfortably speaking to the public, this could be one-on-one or in a group. Information gathering. Communicate complex topics to people of all ages and backgrounds. Comfortable using the online communication platform Discord for internal communication.

    Best Part of this Program:

As a volunteer, you will make new connections, educate people of all ages, engage with your community in a meaningful way, and inspire change! You'll have the opportunity to share what you have learned while attending fun events around town. Meet like-minded folks from your community and become part of a program that has a lasting impact on Santa Cruz!
