Become a Rape Crisis Advocate: Support Survivors of Sexual Assault

Hello Prospective Volunteer,

We are The North Brooklyn Coalition Against Family Violence. Founded in 1998 by six local community-based groups, we are a grassroots agency dedicated to helping survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence identify and reach their recovery goals.

In 2019, North Brooklyn Coalition developed and implemented a new program recruiting and training Rape Crisis Advocates. Our Advocates provide trauma-informed crisis counseling, emotional support, and knowledge of services to survivors seeking medical care and forensic examination at NYCHH Woodhull Hospital. Our Advocates perform a vital role in the survivor response team, as outlined in the New York State Survivor Bill of Rights.

We are seeking dedicated, intrinsically motivated individuals with great interpersonal skills to join our team. Our Advocates are empathic, nonjudgmental, appropriately assertive, mindful and resilient. Our Advocates remain committed to their own self-care and well-being.

All Advocates must complete our free 40-hour Rape Crisis Advocate training provided by experienced staff and guest presenters. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our standard in-person training has been adapted for virtual learning. Our upcoming Fall 2021 Advocate Training will be hosted on Zoom over the course of two full weekends in September: September 18th, September 19th, September 25th and September 26th from 9AM-6PM each day.

We ask that Advocates be at least 18 years old; be able to reach Woodhull Hospital within 20 minutes (we will reimburse you for travel); commit to two on-call shifts per month; attend monthly virtual meet-up groups; and make a one year commitment to the program.

If you are interested in learning more about how to become an Advocate, please apply directly to this post or send an email to Volunteer@NorthBrooklynCoalition.org

We look forward to you joining our dedicated team.
