Tutor Refugee Students Remotely!

FORA is a not-for-profit organization based in Chicago dedicated to empowering refugees through education. We provide intensive 1-1 Math and English tutoring to newly arrived refugee students online. We have a center in the West Ridge neighborhood of Chicago where we tutor refugees students and adults in the neighborhood, but in response to the pandemic, we have transitioned to entirely remote/virtual instruction, and the difficulties faced by the refugee community in this crisis has led us to expand our services to reach more students. We doubled the number of students we were serving and we continue to try and evolve into an organization that can better serve the people we work with!

To continue our work, we are looking for volunteers who want to commit to tutoring newly arrived refugee students in Math and/or Reading every day for an hour every day from September through December. We are looking for dedicated and kind people who are enthusiastic about working with children! We have students from K-12 and we will pair each volunteer with a student for an individual tutoring session. We have online tutoring tools and experienced tutors who will guide volunteers through the process. High school students are welcome to apply as long as they have an adult willing to supervise them. All of our volunteers will need to undergo a background check. What these kids need more than anything is someone who believes in them and wants to invest time in them!

We welcome all refugees into our center but most of our current students are Rohingya Muslims from Burma who have arrived here in the US after escaping genocide. When they arrive in the US, these kids are placed in the grade-level appropriate to their age, even though they may never have attended regular school before. The kids face multiple challenges but the lack of language access is one that really hinders them from fitting in and succeeding in their new environment. At FORA, we bridge this disconnect by providing intensive instruction in reading and math so that our students will be prepared to participate fully in US civic and economic society. This is why Burmese and Malay language speakers would be highly appreciated! Our ability to take on more students and ensure quality education for them depends on volunteers like you!

Currently, we are only able to accept volunteers from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Maine, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, Illinois, California, Maryland, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota and Pennsylvania.
