Advocates for immigrants in Detention NW (AIDNW) operates a Welcome Center outside the release gate of the NW ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, Washington. The volunteers assist the released immigrants by providing travel planning assistance. While travel arrangements are being made, the immigrants are offered a chance to call family/ friends, offered snacks, backpacks, clothing, coats.
The Welcome Center needs summer volunteers to meet a surge in releases from the Northwest ICE Processing Center. Spanish language skills helpful but not required. Training is provided by experienced volunteers. The Welcome Center operates afternoons, Monday through Friday.
In 2021, released immigrants represented 91 different countries.
