    Description

Join the Sempervirens Fund for an enriching three-hour conservation experience focused on eliminating invasive French broom, an exotic shrub that poses a threat to California’s native plants and wildlife. This volunteer event will be hosted at the Girl Scout Camp – Butano Creek, a 142-acre conservation easement forest located south of Butano State Park. As one of our organization’s longest-held conservation easements, we have collaborated with the Girl Scouts of Northern California to ensure the permanent protection of redwood forests, sensitive habitats, and watershed values while maintaining the camp’s ongoing use. The camp boasts diverse habitats, including second-growth redwood, Douglas-fir, oak woodland, and riparian zones, supporting a rich variety of native flora and fauna.

Volunteers will work alongside the Sempervirens Fund’s Stewardship Team to manually remove invasive plant species. All necessary tools and supplies will be provided. Throughout the day, participants will also have the opportunity to learn about native plant identification and forest health. We will conclude the event with a 1-2 mile hike through the redwoods in a recently treated fuel treatment area within the camp.

This volunteer opportunity is moderately strenuous and may involve working on sloped or uneven terrain. Volunteers should be prepared to walk short distances and spend extended periods bending or crouching. The hike will be around 1 -2 miles and have a few hundred feet of incline.

Please also note that this opportunity designed for ages 18+ & up.
