PROGRAM: The VT Youth Tomorrow AmeriCorps VISTA Program supports initiatives helping low-income youth & families develop job skills & academic proficiency, build connection to their community, access health & mental health care, find housing, become food secure, and connect with essential services needed to transcend poverty, avoid unhealthy behaviors, reverse the impacts of COVID-19, and ultimately thrive. Website: www.vermontyouthamericorps.org

SITE: Howard Center serves some of the most vulnerable people in our community, regardless of ability to pay--those with mental illness, developmental disabilities, substance use issues, and educational challenges. Our mission is to improve the well-being of children, adults, families and communities. We help people work toward independence, health & wellness, and self-sufficiency through education, training, and support. Our services include therapeutic schools, residential programs for people with mental illness and developmental disabilities, outpatient counseling, medication assisted recovery, crisis services, and a range of related programs. We serve about 16,000 people each year.

The VYT-Howard Center-Talent & Training VISTA is immersed in our Human Resources department, building capacity and increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of our Talent Acquisition, Benefits, Training & Development, and Safety processes. The VISTA makes positive change by enhancing systems to find qualified applicants to provide services to individuals who have mental illness, developmental disabilities, or who struggle with substance use.

COVID-19: We support clients in addressing the short- and long-term economic and educational impact the pandemic has had on them, including the impact that students accessing school remotely has had on development and mental health. The VISTA contributes directly to these efforts by creating processes and identifying supports for remote services. Location: Burlington, VT

The VYT-Howard Center-Talent & Training VISTA develops projects for both the team and agency level by conducting research on diverse applicant sourcing, evaluating and improving the agency’s internship program, and collaborating with various teams to enhance systems, forms, and processes for an agency providing critical mental health, education, job skills, and substance misuse treatment to vulnerable youth, families, and communities. Minimum Age: 21. Reliable transportation needed: travel to agency locations around Chittenden County; travel to Montpelier for monthly VISTA training. Housing subsidy available.
