AmeriCorps Cape Cod is a 24-member full-time residential service program dedicated to addressing the critical environmental and disaster preparedness and response needs on Cape Cod. Being an AmeriCorps Cape Cod member offers you the opportunity to live in a coastal setting, foster personal development, build leadership skills, explore various sectors of the environmental and disaster preparedness field, gain valuable skills through training and hands-on service experience, build a viable communal living environment, and most importantly, provide valuable and quality environmental and disaster service for the environment and community of Cape Cod.  

Service: As an AmeriCorps Cape Cod member, you are expected to provide quality community service in the areas of natural resource management, disaster preparedness and response, environmental education, and volunteer engagement to Barnstable County departments and towns, state and federal departments and non-profit entities on Cape Cod. You will serve on a variety of service projects both as a team member and as an individual.

Community Strengthening: You are expected to build and strengthen the Cape Cod community and your residential community by demonstrating leadership, initiative, motivation, and teamwork and serve as a role model for others. 

Residential: As a member, you are required to live in the assigned program-provided residence. AmeriCorps Cape Cod provides housing exclusively to members enrolled in the program. Pets are prohibited in the residence. Alcohol and illegal drugs are prohibited both in the residence and on the residential property. Smoking is prohibited within the residence.

All AmeriCorps members must adhere to all AmeriCorps, Barnstable County, and AmeriCorps rules and regulations including following all standards set by AmeriCorps regarding prohibited member activities.

Member Term of Service begins on September 6, 2021, and ends on July 28, 2022. To be eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award, you must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 1700 hours (approximately 40 hours per week) of service within the program time frame. Of the 1700 hours, a maximum of 20% may be training, education, or other similar approved activities.

Benefits:

As a member, you will receive orientation and training, housing, a living stipend, health care benefits, and an education award of $6,345 from the National Service Trust upon successful and satisfactory completion of the program.

 Eligibility

  • Must meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements including clearance on all required National Service Criminal History Checks (National Sex Offender Public Website, State Criminal History Check, and FBI)
  •  Must be 18 years or older
  •  Be a United States citizen or a legal permanent resident
  • Must have at least two years of college or equivalent work or volunteer experience (GED or High School diploma required)
  • Must be able to provide your own reliable motor-vehicle and valid driver’s license
  • Must reside in program provided residence for the duration of the term of service

Essential Functions of the Position

  •  Extensive walking and climbing on equipment and through terrain
  •  Fieldwork requiring endurance and conditioning.
  • Ability to lift more than 50 pounds
  • Ability to bend, stoop, pull, twist, and kneel
  •  Ability to perform demanding physical labor in all weather conditions (cold/hot/wet/dry/humid/snow/rain)
  •  Demonstrated commitment to community service and/or environmental service
  •  Demonstrated ability to work well in a team setting
  •  Must possess initiative
  •  Willingness to deploy nationally in the event of a disaster with short notice

Marginal Functions of Position

  •  Skills, knowledge, and ability with a background in Geographic Information Systems, environmental studies, biology or other sciences
  •   Experience working with children
  •  Experience working outdoors and with power tools
  • Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Design Suite software

AmeriCorps Cape Cod members are not employees. Members receive a stipend and are required to serve 1700 hours over 11 months contingent on grant funds awarded.

The AmeriCorps Cape Cod program is funded through grants from AmeriCorps the Agency and the Massachusetts Service Alliance and matching funds from Barnstable County. Housing is provided by Barnstable County, Town of Barnstable, the Chatham Conservation Foundation, and the Cape Cod National Seashore.

How to Apply

AmeriCorps Cape Cod will be accepting applications for the 2020-2021 Corps until July 30, 2021. Interviews will be offered to qualified applicants whose complete applications have been received before July 30, 2021. Interviews and position offers will be made on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

All AmeriCorps Cape Cod member positions are funded annually contingent upon grant funds appropriated and awarded to the program by the Massachusetts Service Alliance and AmeriCorps the Agency.
