Volunteering with the Brigade
The VHC Medical Brigade offers both stateside and international volunteer experiences for students, clinicians and others who have a passion for healthcare, helping the poor and building relationships with local partners in the communities where we work in Honduras.
Unless otherwise noted below, visit https://www.vhcmedicalbrigade.org/volunteer-app to express interest and learn more.
Stateside: Grant Writing and Development
Grant writing and development volunteers have a passion for and experience in researching and applying for grants, whether foundation, private or governmental. Grant writers spend time researching leads, discovering application requirements, and crafting content to respond to proposals. They also explore organizations doing similar work who might be open to applying for funding together or collaborating in other ways.
Our development committee meets monthly to discuss seasonal strategic fundraising campaigns, events and donor/volunteer engagement. They are willing to engage personal and professional networks and fundraise on behalf of the Brigade, as well as provide project management support for activities. They also interact with vendors, manage timelines, and help to implement fundraising and marketing efforts.
Stateside: Social Media Ambassador
Are you a fan of the Brigade looking to support our work remotely and digitally? We want to create a stateside movement of awareness about healthcare needs in Honduras through socially savvy volunteers who are passionate about our work. These volunteers will be online ambassadors through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, sharing the Brigade’s posts with their networks and serving as peer influencers to increase online engagement and donations. Volunteers will receive guidance and support from our communications consultant as needed.
Stateside: Administrative Support
Volunteers are welcome to support administrative efforts remotely, such as organizing program data or assisting with mailings.
The Brigade depends on volunteers to lead and develop nearly all of its program activities. In this role, you will recruit, screen and help orient new volunteers, ensuring that they are matched to the most appropriate volunteer opportunity for their background and interests. This role also entails coordinating our trips to Honduras, developing creative engagement opportunities for volunteers to socialize and feel appreciated, and, if its within your skill set, developing a tracking mechanism to capture volunteer hours and activities.
Stateside: Medical Supply Sorting and Packing
Volunteers are welcome at our Falls Church warehouse to sort medical supplies for shipment to Honduras. No clinical experience is necessary, but you will get to meet like-minded friends from a variety of clinical backgrounds, including physical therapy, anesthesiology, general medicine, nursing and more.
Community Development Program
Manage and oversee potable water projects in 13 rural communities where the Brigade has established and oversees clinics, school education and health programs. The management activities include making periodic visits to the communities during the course of the year and overseeing our agreement with a local NGO to monitor water quality and provide technical assistance.
Honduras: Medical Mission Trip
Join medical professionals and other volunteers for a one-week medical mission to provide patient healthcare services, like surgeries and other hard to obtain treatments. Both clinical and non-clinical volunteers may apply. Our next trip will be for surgical services in fall 2021.
