Overview

The Waltham YMCA is dedicated to improving the health of mind, body, and spirit of individuals and families in our communities. We welcome men and women, boys and girls of all incomes, faiths and cultures.

The YMCA of Greater Boston has been a part of the Waltham community since the 1950’s when a summer camp was developed for children. Committed to being a part of the city of Waltham in 1984 the YMCA built a full family ordinated facility.

This past year, The YMCA of Greater Boston has set up 70 hunger prevention distribution sites, employed over 440 teens this past summer completing more than 137,000 hours elevating their self-worth and self-confidence. Provided 135,5000 hours of free emergency care to 428 children

of essential workers from 138 companies, delivered 3.3 million grab and go meals to children and adults, delivered 175,863 bags of groceries feeding a family of 4 for 3 days and seniors for 1 week, and provided 317,583 hours of academic support to 711 children in our 25 Community Learning Centers and Afterschool Programs.

The YMCA will partner with others to create a community of caring people to improve health and empower youth and families. The YMCA is a cornerstone for social change, empowering individuals and families of all backgrounds and at all stages of life to learn, throve and improve our community.

The YMCA focuses on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.

Board Member Essential Functions

Board members are expected to create opportunity by:

  • Strategically aligning with key partners, inviting and introducing people to the Waltham Y and sharing the story of work we do to better the community.
  • Board members are expected to attend 70% of board meetings per year. They are expected to read board materials in advance of board meetings and to come prepared to ask questions and participate in discussions.
  • Board members are expected to serve on one or more of the committees of the board and to actively participate in committee work.
  • Board members are expected to play an active role in securing annual campaign dollars necessary for the Waltham YMCA to achieve its mission.
  • Board members are expected to leverage personal relationships and connections to help the development committee and staff identify and solicit potential donors, as well as directly invest in the Waltham YMCA work by making a personal contribution each year.
  • Board members are expected to responsibly represent The Waltham YMCA to their respective communities and to advocate for The Waltham YMCA’s mission, programs, and services as appropriate.
  • Board terms last for three years and, board members can serve for up to two consecutive terms.
