Purpose/objective: KOM leads afterschool programs at Humboldt and Harding high schools in St. Paul to provide academic, cultural and social support for Karen youth who have been in the U.S. under 5 years. KOM's Youth and Family Coach program also works with refugee youth in different schools in St. Paul who need extra academic support. Tutors focus on providing homework help for students.
*Due to COVID-19, tutoring is happening online. Distance learning has been challenging for our youth and staff, so we need use your support!*
Time commitment: Available to tutor at least 2 hours/week during the afterschool program. Times range from 12:30pm to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.
Location: Remote volunteer support needed due to COVID-19 (Potential for limited in-person tutoring at a designated location. More info to come)
Qualifications: Patient, flexible and self-motivated college students or adults who have a passion to tutor high school students with limited English proficiency.
Measures: Volunteers are required to sign in and out at the start and end of their volunteering each day on our sign in sheet located in the classroom. Virtual tutors must log their hours online through our online database system.
Benefits: The tutor has the opportunity to grow their tutoring skills for students with limited English proficiency and enhance their cross-cultural communication skills.

Please complete KOM’s Volunteer Application online or contact Suzanne Olive to receive a paper application. Volunteers will complete a brief interview to discuss their interest in tutoring. The volunteer will be connected with the Youth Coordinator who leads the afterschool program, or the Youth and Family Coach to get connected with students.
