Software Engineer - AllyUp

Geeking Out Kids of Color (GOKiC)

Position Status: Mobile App Software Engineer

Location:  Virtual

Compensation: Volunteer


Context:  Geeking Out Kids of Color (GOKiC) is designing AllyUp, a cross-platform mobile app that provides ongoing education to aspiring allies to BIPOC. The app takes on the responsibility of presenting research findings for aspiring allies and relieves the pressure on the BIPOC community to address all the questions on how to be involved. 


Description of Work:

AllyUp is growing and users have shared feedback on important features they’d like to see to improve their experience and connect them with one another and their communities. As part of the team, you will provide cross-platform engineering expertise across the entire development process, you’ll help architect and design key features, lead low-cost and scalable implementation strategies, setting and keeping a high-quality bar, and co-own our DevOps pipeline. Your experience will help us deliver the best experience to aspiring allies and release AllyUp to the public.


Impact: Work with leaders in social justice movements, community organizing, and racial and gender studies to decolonize tech spaces and technology for social equity. Creating a platform for other aspiring allies to truly become effective in their journey relieving pressure from our BIPOC communities.

Responsibilities 


  • Work in a positive, collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Design and implement critical features, frontend, and backend.
  • Create low-cost, scalable solutions to ensure AllyUp success at scale.
  • Contribute to improving our engineering processes to ensure app quality and predictable releases.
  • Regularly improve our DevOps process to smooth our continuous integrations and deliveries.
  • Work with CTO and fellow engineers to modularize AllyUp into reusable mobile app components. 
  • Help ensure live site health of AllyUp and its services.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications 


Minimum Qualifications 


  • Loves Geeking Out Kids of Color’s mission
  • Knowledgeable around racial & gender justice
  • Professional experience designing, developing, and shipping high-quality mobile apps.
  • Strong web development skills, including Typescript, Angular, and/or React
  • Experience building web services with .NET Framework or .NET Core
  • Experience building cloud services in Azure or AWS
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the passion and drive to lead and deliver results 


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing mobile phone applications with Ionic
  • Experience developing both native and cross-platform applications with native capabilities
  • SQL database programming and data modeling
  • Actively involved in social equity efforts
