Student Support Specialist (AmeriCorps) @ Kreiva Academy Charter School

Kreiva Academy is an urban charter school located in downtown, Manchester, NH. The Kreiva educational philosophy is rooted in learning that meets students where they are at in their academic journey. To this end, Kreiva Academy uses the project approach to design highly experiential learning experiences that support students' interests and abilities to meet rigorous standards. We have adopted a competency-based assessment which provides students with a multitude of opportunities to demonstrate proficiency of learning targets across the disciplines and empowers students to more effectively manage their own learning journey. Many of our students have not found academic success in traditional public schools and come to Kreiva seeking more student-centered approaches to learning. Kreiva provides a welcoming and supportive community to students seeking a non-traditional school program where they can meet their potential for the learner they seek to be.

AmeriCorps members will mentor cohorts of either middle or high school students through goal setting, academic, and social-emotional support. They will also support students participating in remote learning. We serve students through an experiential, topic-based curriculum and a community culture shaped by the Growth Mindset to engage middle and high school students who are seeking a rigorous education in a non-traditional setting, which allows them to customize their paths toward mastery.

Granite State Service Corps

In the Granite State Service Corps, direct service AmeriCorps members serve at-risk youth across New Hampshire. Many Granite State youth have been impacted by trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), which, without proper support, can negatively affect success, health, and functioning long-term.

The good news? The impacts of ACEs can be counteracted, and one of those “counter-ACEs” is relationships. The Granite State Service Corps aims to introduce stability and positive relationships into the lives of at-risk middle and high school youth by pairing them with AmeriCorps member mentors, who regularly meet one-on-one with a caseload of ten students to increase their resiliency, social and emotional skills, and self-sufficiency—in essence, serving the “whole child.”

Members are placed at host site organizations across the Granite State, from the Seacoast’s Dover and Rochester to Tilton, by the lakes and mountains, to southern New Hampshire’s cities of Concord, Manchester, and Nashua. Host sites include schools like Next Charter School and Kreiva Academy; community organizations such as the Dover Housing Authority and Nashua Police Athletic League; and afterschool programs like the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester.
