We are looking for up to ten passionate and high-calibre volunteers, who are recent university graduates looking to build their work experience and contribute to the operations of a forward-thinking climate think-and-do-tank. As an Assistant Officer II reporting directly to either the Assistant Chief of Staff or a Division Head under this placement programme, you will undertake two three-month placements in our 100-strong Secretariat where you will provide support to the daily operations of the Division to which you will be posted; and learn about the work of the BCI.

Participating divisions include Director-General's Office, Administration Division, Development Division, and Research Divisions I/II/III. Successful candidates may be appointed as Divisional Secretary (DS), Assistant Executive Officer (AEO), Assistant Development Officer (ADO), Assistant Research Officer (ARO), Assistant Legal Research Officer (ALRO) or Assistant Technology Officer (ATO), dependent on the appointee's credentials and our operational needs.

After six months, if your performance is satisfactory and you wish to continue volunteering with the BCI, you may be eligible to join the Executive Officer, Development Officer, Research Officer, or Technology Officer Grades.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Handling internal and external correspondence for a Head of Division;
  • Engaging with your peers across the BCI to ensure that your Division’s work is ‘plugged in’ to the organisation as a whole;
  • Providing a wide range of administrative support for your Division;
  • Working with the Chief of Staff and Assistant Chief of Staff to manage information flows between your Division and the Director-General’s Office;
  • Carrying out factual desk research to inform your Division’s priorities;
  • Helping your divisional colleagues prepare project proposals, think pieces, communication material etc.; and/or
  • Undertaking training to build your expertise on climate and tech issues, and particularly on the intersection of the two.

Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent oral communication skills, including the ability to develop effective working relationships, work flexibly across professional and operational boundaries, and communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders at all levels;
  • Excellent English writing (the ability to work in other languages is desirable);
  • Close attention to detail;
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to balance competing work demands;
  • Ability to support technology-enabled meetings (e.g. video conferencing, skype, digital conference calls);
  • Strong work ethics, with a conscientious and proactive approach;
  • Strong sense of mission; and
  • Good problem-solving skills.

General & Specialist Knowledge

  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel;
  • Basic knowledge of Trello & Slack will be beneficial;
  • Interest in developing knowledge of climate change, climate finance, blockchain and other emerging technologies; and
  • Some knowledge on topics central to the BCI work programmes such as climate change, green finance, blockchain and AI technology preferred.

Education & Training

  • Educated to degree level (with less than one year of work experience)

Time Commitment

  • Volunteers of Assistant Officer II rank are expected to commit approximately two days a week (weekdays and/or weekends) on average.

Selection Procedures

  • Eligible candidates will be invited to sit for a two-hour written assessment which comprises a reasoning test and an in-tray exercise. The written assessment will be conducted virtually by appointment. Best-performing candidates in the written assessment will be invited to attend interviews with the Common Recruitment Board.
