The Washington Youth Soccer Foundation is looking for volunteers for the 2020-2021 school year to fill coach-mentor positions. Soccer for Success is the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s innovative youth development program that uses soccer as a tool to combat childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles for children in low-income urban communities.

Soccer for Success coaches-mentors should be prepared to teach and encourage healthy lifestyles, being a positive role model, and investing in the successful development of their players. No coaching experience is required, but the position will require coaches to organize and oversee practice sessions.

Individual program schedules will be determined by Washington Youth Soccer Foundation and the school, but format will follow: three 90 minutes sessions per week, spread over two 12-week seasons (fall/spring), immediately following the end of the school day. Start times range from 3:00 pm -- 3:45 pm. Coaches will be expected to work for 2 hours on each of the three days.

Responsibilities:

  • Utilize established curriculum to run practice sessions three times a week in the afternoon/early evening at assigned school(s).
  • Sessions can include drills, skills challenges, scrimmages, and other soccer-related activities.
  • Properly plan, organize, and distribute snacks during and after practice sessions.
  • Set up and tear down fields/pitches before and after practice sessions.
  • Teach proper nutrition to players with a Soccer for Success-approved lesson plan.
  • Debrief with players at the end of every sessions.
  • Connect with families and ensure that they also receive the nutrition and fitness information and are informed about Soccer for Success events.
