MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS!
Samaritans of New York operates the city's 24-hour suicide prevention hotline. Last year, we answered over 75,000 hotline calls. Samaritans is part of a well-established international network of 400 centers in 42 countries where over 20,000 volunteers provide crisis response and emotional support services to people who are in distress, depressed and suicidal.
Almost anyone who finds themselves facing some overwhelming obstacle or personal tragedy needs help getting through their moment of crisis. At Samaritans of NYC, our caring volunteers respond to people of all backgrounds: teenagers, the elderly, people dealing with chronic and terminal illnesses like cancer or AIDS; victims of violence, bullying and sexual abuse; the homeless, unemployed, veterans; those with sexual identity issues, who are trying to cope with stigma, who are hesitant to seek help.
The work is challenging, the training intensive and the experience extremely rewarding! You must be focused, disciplined and keep the commitments you make. This is serious work; you'll be joining a group of dedicated volunteers from NYC's diverse communities who work together in a supportive environment in a convenient Village location.
