Reports to: Program Manager and Volunteer Manager

Works with: East Bay program staff, Renaissance clients

Location: Richmond, California (Remote)

 

Renaissance seeks volunteer Business Mentors to deliver training and consulting services to our small business clients, empowering them with business knowledge, skills and networks. 

As a mentor, you’ll help clients solve problems, make businesses more efficient, and assist with starting and growing their businesses. In addition, the mentor role takes a long-range view of the client’s growth and development. Mentors help these entrepreneurs see the destination but do not give the detailed map to get there. Offers encouragement and cheerleading, but not "how-to" advice


Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center (www.rencenter.org) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit social impact organization. We have been building better communities for 35 years by helping under-resourced women and men start and grow their own businesses, transforming their lives and creating sustainable jobs, economic vitality, and vibrant neighborhoods. Renaissance operates four program centers and multiple off-site programs throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. This role is to support our Contra Costa County and Alameda County clients.


Note:  During the current coronavirus pandemic, Renaissance is adhering to health and safety social distance protocols; all staff are currently working from home.  As protocols are adjusted and the pandemic evolves, this position will be based in the East Bay. 


Volunteer Mentor Roles: 

Volunteers may select from one or more of the following mentorship structures. All sessions will take place online or by phone (in person when safe to do so). 

  • One-on-one mentoring with a Renaissance client
  • Lead a small group of entrepreneurs in a particular industry to facilitate group discussions, cooperation, and accountability 
  • Workshop presenter: lead workshops in your area of expertise to our entrepreneurs 
  • Curriculum development: help update and develop new curriculum for our classes and workshop


Currently Seeking Expertise in the following areas:

  • Food Business Start-Up and Growth assistance
  • Strategic Marketing
  • Digital Marketing and Social Media Strategies
  • E-Commerce (Shopify, Square, etc)
  • Business Plan review 
  • Visual Merchandising
  • HR, Hiring and Recruiting employees


Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience and comfort with the inner workings of small businesses in one or more industries and diverse communities
  • Expertise in coaching/training/consulting with small business owners; strength in working directly with clients and case management models; understanding of adult learning and experience in creating training and curriculum. 
  • Comfort working in a small, highly communicative, collaborative, and mission-driven organization
  • Able to submit consultation forms after meeting with clients, or participating in pre or post meetings for workshop instructors.
  • Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree(s) desirable but not required
  • Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese fluency a plus 


Time Commitment

Business mentors should expect to devote a minimum of 5 hours per month to this volunteer role. This includes time with clients, completing necessary paperwork and communicating with program staff.
