The University of Miami Office of Civic and Community Engagement (CCE) fosters campus-community collaboration by engaging the university’s academic resources in the enrichment of civic and community life. Their overarching goal is to further engage scholarship by developing teaching and research strategies that link academic scholarship to public service – promoting education for citizenship and civic responsibility. Through their focus on Affordable Housing and inclusive community development, they have developed the Miami Housing Solutions Lab (MHSL), a suite of free, publicly accessible mapping tools designed to provide data-rich resources about affordable housing in the Miami metro region. This platform provides community groups, planners, changemakers, and affordable housing developers with information on local housing needs as well as housing policies that prevent displacement and promote affordable housing. Expanding on previous projects, CCE will continue its work to examine the impacts of climate change on Miami’s affordable housing stock and vulnerable populations. This continued project builds on the momentum of CCE’s work assessing the impacts of sea-level rise on affordable housing to examine the devastating impacts of extreme heat on the provision of equitable housing development and community resilience. The UM Office of Civic and Community Engagement (CCE) will collaborate with local stakeholders to identify creative design and policy solutions to increase Miami's adaptive capacity, while building new networks to strengthen urban resiliency. Specifically, CCE, its partners, and the VISTA member will study solutions to develop comprehensive and expert-guided resilience strategies for Miami residents.
