Founded in 2003, Youth Action (YA) is an organization that believes if young people are given a platform to lead and serve, they can change the world. In everything YA does, YA inspires youth to see beyond their self-interest and realize their potential to make a difference. YA programs are invested in helping students develop their leadership capacity by giving them the tools they need to address community problems.

Through innovative programming, Youth Action produces socially responsible leaders by providing them with leadership training and nd funding to lead and serve their communities

Currently, Philadelphia Youth Action has three core service programs to fulfil our mission of producing socially responsible and transformational leaders who have both the skill and desire to serve their communities. These programs are: The Junior Youth Action Program (JYA), the Inspiring Leaders Program (ILP), and the Service Leader Program (SLP). These programs all focus on youth civic engagement in Philadelphia.

Position Summary

Director of the Inspiring Leaders Program The Director the Inspiring Leader Program (ILP) oversees the coordination and administration of all aspects of the program including planning, organizing, volunteer participation, leading, and controlling program activities.

The Inspiring Leader Program Director works with 9th and 10th grade high school students to provide them with volunteer opportunities, help them organize their own service projects, and

strengthen their leadership skills through workshops. ILP is a 2-3 times a month program that builds students in Youth Action to become leaders in their communities. The primary responsibility of the Director of ILP is to ensure that the ILP program is effective and students who participate in the program grow in leadership and service to their communities. This position reports to the Executive Director of Youth Action

Hours & Support

The position begins in August with some training in July. Weekly Wednesday Meetings from 6:00pm-7:00pm; 1st & 3rd Saturdays of Month 10am-2pm at a local university in West Philadelphia, (sometimes 4th). Session prep & support work with students service required. Volunteer Hours Estimation- 15-20 hours a month.

Directors will receive a volunteer stipend that starts at $2,100 (potential opportunities for more stipend) to cover volunteer service between August 1st-May 30th

This position is great for someone who has a passion for youth yet cannot commit full time to work at a non-profit; desires more experience in the non-profit realm, or a college student look for my experience.

Responsibilities

Programmatic Operations

▪ Design & lead Sessions on leadership & civic engagement to 9th & 10th grade students the Inspiring Leaders Program

▪ Passionately Serve as the lead spokesperson of the program

▪ Serve on Youth Action’s Executive Team- Attend scheduled once a week check in meetings/trainings

▪ Supervise, train, mentor, and assist facilitators with ILP programming

▪ Support program recruitment & selection of students- review applications, email & call students/parents, and interview students

▪ Work closely with parents and members of Philadelphia community that are invested in the program

Program Sessions & Activities

▪ Be present at ILP Program sessions

▪ Plan the delivery of the overall program and its activities in accordance with the mission

and the goals of the organization

▪ Facilitate ILP program sessions two-three times a month (Saturdays in person 10am-12pm) by facilitating sessions that will allow students to reflect & research community issues & concerns; host & correspond with speakers for the program; Lead the direction and planning of student service projects

▪ Coach and ensure that the ILP curriculum is delivered effectively by facilitators to meet desired

learning objectives centered on developing socially responsible leaders who lead their communities

▪ Coordinate student bonding activities and events

▪ Become well acquainted with students in program

▪ Maintain programmatic materials, conduct & organize evaluation/metrics & attendance

records for program

▪ Maintain continued contact with students and parents in the program

▪ Support the coordination of Youth Action’s Closing Ceremony

Skills

▪ Must have youth development work experience

▪ Preferred native of Philadelphia

▪ Must have exemplary leadership and service experience

▪ Must be well organized, dependable, and have great time management skills

▪ Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed

▪ Results driven, ability to drive the team effectively, and a team player

▪ Analytical, problem solving skills, and negotiation skills

▪ Leadership and team development

▪ Must be a college student or young working professional within their 20s in the Greater Philadelphia area

▪ Preferred native of Philadelphia

▪ Must have exemplary leadership and service experience

▪ Must be well organized, dependable, and have great time management skills

▪ Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed

▪ Results driven, ability to drive the team effectively, and a team player
