Eye Health Workshop Volunteer

The organisation

Eye Heroes is the UK’s first child-led campaign to fight avoidable blindness. Children are trained through volunteer-led interactive workshops in schools and after-school clubs to become eye health champions, and to inform people in their communities about eye health and the benefits of regular eye tests.

This is an exciting time to join Eye Heroes because we are starting a new project in Greater London where we will run 200 workshops over the next two years.

The position

Volunteers will deliver workshops to children aged 8–12 on eye health using the materials and guidance that have been developed by Eye Heroes. Volunteers do not need to be experts: no special skills or knowledge of science, eye health or eye care are required.

Volunteers need to be able to engage children’s interest and respond to their questions and curiosity. For in-person workshops, a member of the school staff will always be present during the workshop.

Volunteer profile

Essential:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Interest in our work at Eye Heroes and in our mission
  • Highly motivated, self-directed and results-driven
  • Willingness to deliver at least eight workshops per year

Desirable:

  • Experience of working or volunteering with children
  • Public speaking or presentation skills
  • Positive attitude.

People whose lives have been affected by sight loss have an important voice in the work we do. Hence, we encourage applications from anyone who has personal experience of sight loss or blindness, including those impacted through family or similar circumstances.
