Letter-Writing Volunteer Position Summary

El Refugio’s Letter-Writing Volunteer will work together in a team to ensure well-functioning of El Refugio’s Letter-Writing Program. We seek a volunteer who is passionate about accompanying detained immigrants. Letter-Writing Volunteers take on various responsibilities related to letters El Refugio receives from detained individuals at Stewart Detention Center (SDC), such as picking up letters at El Refugio’s PO Box (located in Decatur, GA), reading letters, sending timely appropriate responses to requests from detained individuals, adding information from each letter to our database, and scanning and sending letters to volunteers.


Qualifications:

  • Dedicated to working and supporting immigrants directly affected by the US immigration detention system. 
  • Good communication and organizational skills - communicating with volunteers primarily through e-mail.
  • Spanish proficiency (fluency is not necessary, but some Spanish language ability is required).
  • Capable of using an online database and Google Documents.


Main responsibilities:

  • Pick up El Refugio mail every 2-3 weeks (PO Box in Decatur, GA)[1].
  • Open and read letters received from people detained at SDC.
  • Entry of information in the database[2].
  • Scanning certain letters & sending them to other volunteers via email. 
  • Sending a postcard response for particular requests such as books, bags, or visits.
  • Maintaining constant communication via text or email with the other Letter-Writing Volunteers to coordinate letter pick up and engage in any other communications related to letters received from SDC.

[1] Applicants who live within the proximities of Decatur are strongly encouraged to apply. People who live within a reasonable distance from the city of Decatur and have the ability to travel at least every other week to pick up the letters will be considered.

[2] El Refugio will provide appropriate training and the necessary tools to do this volunteer job.
