Waste Reduction VISTA I

Members will assist the Office of Support Services and current full time VISTA with the waste reduction, recycling, and compost workshops by planning workshops, selecting neighborhoods, performing outreach, etc. Set to directly educate residents and youth on waste reduction topics to improve behavior with actions concerning sustainability and waste management. They will also recruit and plan with community partners such as local businesses, community associations, and non-profits to help determine programming and promote activities to maximize success.

The main objective of this program is to support the Bureau’s Summer Youthworks program by coordinating and implementing a project for the summer employees to engage residents on waste reduction, recycling, keeping a clean city, and other topics in an effort to improve Baltimore’s impoverished areas. Members will work with young adults as well as DPW and outside agency staff to assist on ongoing waste reduction workshops to raise awareness on sustainability practices in addition to recruiting community partners to collaborate on future outreach programming.

Seeking prospective candidates with a minimum of High School diploma (Bachelor's degree preferred) experience and/or education in environmental or sustainability programs; experience working with community and non-profit organizations; experience with event planning and/or project management; skilled in verbal and written communications.

  • Note that this is a volunteer position for the job site and is only for the summer (June-August 2021. VISTA members are essentially federal employees. The opportunity does provide job experience in the relevant fields at the job site and also comes with a bi-weekly stipend. The total amount of the biweekly stipend is around $613. Options for awards upon completing service include the Education Award valued at $1,342.86 as well as a Cash Stipend valued at $345.80. We will reach out to applicants between now and once the deadline of 4/26/21 is reached.
  • Work will be full-time (Monday- Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm) and will be temporarily remote due to COVID-19. DPW will provide selected candidates with a city email and laptop.
  • *Applicants must be 18 years or older, have at least a high school diploma or equivalent, must be able to pass a criminal history check, and be either a U.S. Citizen; US National, US Lawful Resident (Green Card Status), or persons legally residing within a state.
