Become a Volunteer Tutor for an adult student

LVM Literacy Unlimited at Framingham Library is always looking for volunteers to become English and literacy tutors. We have two types of tutoring programs for students: ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and BL (Basic Literacy). The highest need at this time is for ESOL tutors. You do not need to have prior teaching experience or speak another language to be an effective English tutor. Requirements for tutoring with the Literacy Unlimited program are outlined below.

The next ESOL tutor trainings are:

    September 4th to October 9th, in-person (Framingham Public Library, Costin Room)-Thursdays, 1:30-4:30pm - 9/4, 9/11, 9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9.

Before you register, please attend the in-person tutor information session on September 13th at 10am-online via Zoom.

    Volunteer tutor responsibilities:

Complete LVM's ABE or ESOL tutor training.

Prepare individualized student-centered lesson plans for assigned student.

Tutor student for 2 hours per week for a minimum of 9-12 months.

    Support student evaluation activities.

    Volunteer tutor qualifications:

Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, sense of humor, patience and ability to work with diverse groups.

Compassion for the struggles of adult learners, especially those with limited literacy and English language skills, disadvantaged and typically marginalized populations.

All volunteer tutors must undergo an ~18-hour tutor training before they can begin to work with a student.
