THE POSITION: Social Justice Curriculum & Instructional Specialist

THE ORGANIZATION: Boys Hope Girls Hope of New York (BHGH of NY) is an urban boarding college access program located in Brooklyn, New York. The program provides wrap around services to scholars in residence which include tutoring, service learning, arts programming and more. Our young women reside in East Flatbush and our young men reside in Fort Greene.


THE ROLE: At Boys Hope Girls Hope of New York (BHGH of NY) when it comes to education we

believe in enriching our scholars far beyond the classroom. Through our Service Learning in Action

Program, we educate our young adults about local, regional, and global concerns, with efforts to

cultivate impactful citizens for years to come.


This year, our program will be completely virtual and utilize the Facing History curriculum to explore the question: How Did We Get Here? Through our two-part model, service cohorts will examine this question through readings, journaling, discussion and developing a community centered project. Our goal is to deepen the scholars understanding of the underlying issues surrounding their lives and the globe. In order to continue our efforts, we are seeking an experienced Social Justice Curriculum & Instructional Specialist to facilitate the Facing History curriculum with our scholars.


As a Social Justice Curriculum & Instructional Specialist, your responsibilities & obligations would be as follows (but are not limited to):

Facilitate the Facing History Curriculum:

Title of Series: How Did We Get Here?

Policing and the Legacy of Racial Injustice

Session 1 – Preparing for a conversation about policing and racial injustice

Session 2 – The History of Slave Patrols, Black Codes, and Vagrancy Laws

Session 3 – Policing, Public Safety and Bias

Session 4- Creating a Society that Ensures Safety for All

Sessions 5– Sessions 8 Project Planning & Community Development Project

-Engage scholars through experiential learning through the digital platform of Zoom

-Instruct scholars through a variety of learning styles including lectures, group discussions, and readings

-Incorporate scholar reflection and journaling during the sessions with the Facing History Curriculum

-Review Project Planning & Management with scholars

-Create and administer scholar assessments

-Must be available on Wednesdays from 6:00pm –7:30pm

-Must be present on all programming events

Day & Time: Wednesdays from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Part 1- Educational Sessions-

March -17, 2021 - April 21, 2021

Part 2- Project Planning & Community Development Project -

April 28th, 2021 – May 12th, 2021

4/28, 5/5, 5/12


Project Date: 5/13/2021

Other assistance may be assigned, as directed by the Directors of Academic Success

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1-3 years of experience in instruction and advocacy in area of expertise
  • Prior teaching/instructing experience
  • Experience working with/for high school students in an urban setting
  • Experience with project management is preferred
