Teaching English and/or Math and/or Creative Classes and other subjects to disadvantaged Teenagers in Moshi, Tanzania

WHO ARE WE?

Good Hope is a women-led grassroots community organization located in Moshi, Tanzania. The organization was founded in October 2011, and is a registered NGO in Tanzania. Our NGO has a strong focus on teenage girls and seeks to eliminate education inequality. We provide a stepping stone program for teenagers from impoverished families and orphans who slipped through the net of Tanzania’s education system. We currently offer free on-site schooling for primary-school drop-outs, secondary school and vocational training scholarships, and close counselling with students enrolled in our program and their families. Good Hope currently employs four trained staff members and two national and international pro-bono advisors. Up to today, Good Hope has welcomed more than 200 students in the on-site teaching program and we have awarded 64 students with a school and/or training scholarship up to university education.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We are currently looking for up to three volunteers to assist with our Free Education program at Good Hope. This involves teaching English skills, Geography via your own experiences in your home countries or travels, or whatever project you want to share with the students that will enhance their knowledge of English and other subjects.

You will work with the most adorable, respectful and eager to learn teenagers that you could ever imagine. As you arrive at school each day they will vie for the privilege of carrying your bags, greet you with amazing smiles and as time goes on, confide and trust in you as their teacher. Do not confuse the Good Hope kids with your current experience of teenagers! Our kids take their second chance to education seriously! Our team and our students offer volunteers an opportunity to enter their lives and hearts with an openness that gives back rewards in personal fulfilment and experience a thousand fold.

While working at Good Hope you actively contribute to a brighter future for our marginalized youth in the suburbs of Moshi. But more than that, we welcome you to live with us, learn about a new culture and language. Let us share and learn from each other!

What we are looking for as a must:
  • Good English skills albeit as a second or third language
  • Commitment to turn up on time every day and not let the kids down without reason
  • A flexible, can do attitude with a willingness to give it a go
  • Fun loving, caring and respectful people that will want to immerse themselves in the local culture and are happy to abide by local customs and traditions EG: Dress etiquette (no knees, shoulders or midriffs on display in school)
  • Team players with initiative that can come up with ideas, teaching projects and systems and then both implement and share them with the rest of the team
  • An open minded approach to volunteering, living and working in a very different culture that is poverty driven
What we would love to have as a bonus:
  • Teaching experience at any level
  • A background that would encompass teaching different subjects such as Science, Chemistry or Biology, via project driven classes
  • Social work or health related background
  • The personal situation and circumstance to take up a six month or more placement

WHAT DO WE OFFER?

  • Preparation via Mail and/or Skype
  • Contact to former volunteers to get individual experiences
  • Airport pick-up
  • Accommodation either in a local family home, or in a shared volunteer house with volunteers from other organizations
  • A local contact person in case of emergency

Unfortunately Good Hope does not have the financial means to offer you an allowance or cover your costs of living. But we promise you a local experience full of exchange and mutual learning in our warm and welcoming community in Moshi.
