About Masa: Masa is a community-based organization in the South Bronx dedicated to partnering with Mexican/Latin American immigrant children, youth, and families to develop strong learners and leaders who fully contribute to the broader community. We offer a broad range of educational, family engagement, leadership development, and community empowerment programs.

About Masa Parents in Action: Masa Parent in Action (MPIA) is a group of parents dedicated to improving the educational experiences and outcomes of families in the South Bronx, especially amongst Latin American immigrant families. MPIA believes in fostering parent leadership and offers periodic leadership courses (PLC) that are instructed by the Community Organizer. The courses are crafted with the input and support of MPIA parent leaders. Our next course will begin on August 14th and will extend into September.

Volunteer description: The MPIA Volunteer Assistant will provide critical support to the Community organizer during the PLC and assist in planning and executing MPIA events during August and September.

The MPIA Volunteer Assistant should be passionate about education justice, fully bilingual in Spanish and English and excited about the opportunity to work with parents to further develop their leadership and knowledge.

Responsibilities include:

  • Attend all Parent Leadership sessions remotely (beginning Aug 14th – Mid-September) and take diligent notes, including documenting parent opinions, questions and feedback on course improvement
  • Support curriculum development, including creating discussion prompts, activities, and icebreakers that promote community building and leadership
  • In partnership with parents, co-create and implement one to two events including engaging in community outreach (phone/text banking & social media posts etc.)
  • Communicate with members of the parent committee by conducting reminder and follow up phone calls Engage in other tasks as assigned

Requirements:

  • Excited about and committed to Masa’s mission; experience serving immigrant communities strongly preferred
  • Must be a fluent Spanish speaker who is comfortable facilitating and developing relationships with parents in Spanish. Required English and Spanish fluency in both oral and written communication
  • Demonstrated interest in community organizing, education and social justice.
  • Comfortable talking about racial justice issues and current political events
  • Able to work independently when needed
  • Some college preferred
  • Commitment to adhere to all Masa policies and procedures.

Time commitment: The ideal candidate should be able to commit to volunteering 3 days a week including Tuesdays & Fridays from 2–7pm, with the flexibility in choosing the 3rd day for a total of 10-12 hours a week.
