Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest, and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. We create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. Founded in 1968, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Butler County, Ohio serves hundreds of children and youth each year through our mentoring programs in communities throughout Butler County. Youth who are matched with a mentor improve their academic performance, develop a healthier sense of self, adopt healthy attitudes regarding risky behaviors, and improve their relationships with family and peers.

About Big Futures

We are currently seeking working adults or retirees who are interested in empowering the potential of the next generation. Mentors in our Big Futures Program are matched with high school freshmen or sophomores to help them envision and plan for a successful future in the workforce. Mentors share what they've learned and experienced in their career, and help their mentees realize a path toward success and fulfillment.

As a Big Futures mentor, you will meet with your mentee twice per month. One meeting is one-on-one, during which you will meet at your workplace or other public location to share your experiences and perspectives in order to encourage and support your mentee toward their career goals. The other meeting is a group outing, in which you and your mentee will join other Big Futures participants to tour a local business and learn about career opportunities at that business.

Please note: during the COVID-19 pandemic, group outings may not be possible, and virtual meetings may replace in-person meetings. Program activities will proceed as normal once the pandemic has passed. As such, you must be comfortable meeting with your mentee in a virtual environment.

Qualifications

You must be at least 18 years of age and either living or working within or near Butler County, Ohio. All interested mentors must complete an application, supply references, successfully complete a criminal background and driving records check, and participate in an interview with one of our Enrollment Specialists. You must have a valid driver's license and automobile insurance. Individuals from all communities in Butler County, and from all types of professions and industries (currently employed or retired), are encouraged to apply. Groups of employees from a business are welcome. We have a particular need for male mentors, and for mentors who work in, or have retired from, a trade.

Other Requirements

The time commitment for this opportunity is twice per month, for 2 to 4 hours at a time. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one year, preferably longer, so as to build a thriving mentoring relationship that will be of greatest benefit to the youth.
