The organization:

Trama Textiles is a 100% worker-owned women's weaving cooperative based in Guatemala, created to help local women receive a fair salary through weaving textiles. This cooperative is the perfect place to volunteer if you're creative, self-motivated, and interested in Guatemala's Mayan traditions.

Working directly with 17 weaving cooperatives, representing 400 women from five different regions, Trama Textiles' headquarters is in the beautiful highland city of Quetzaltenango (Xela). In Xela, we have a shop where the handwoven items are sold, and a weaving school offering hands-on classes for individuals wanting to learn about Guatemala's traditional weaving processes. We also sell our products internationally online, as well as working with wholesale clients to fulfill large and custom orders. 


The position:

Our Content Writer & Public Relations Intern, will write engaging and captivating content across a number of different channels.

They will be responsible for our monthly newsletter and blog as well as any other ad-hoc writing that is needed.

In addition, they will use their writing skills to raise Trama’s public profile, through reach-out to publications, journals, blogs and other possible publicity opportunities.


Responsibilities include:

  • Research, develop and write a compelling and engaging blog and newsletter
  • Collaborate with our intern and volunteer team to locate content gaps and generate new ideas
  • Developing and implementing blogger and influencer outreach programmes
  • Developing media outreach strategy, working with media outlets and travel guides to raise awareness of our organisation
  • Devising and implementing a monitoring system to track, analyse and evaluate communications and marketing performance
  • Stay up-to-date with developments in relevant news stories, social media trends, key publications and use to develop Trama Textiles’ public presence

Desired skills and experience:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with advanced English skills and at least basic Spanish
  • Minimum 1 year professional/volunteer experience in copywriting, or relevant studies in creative writing, journalism, literature, media
  • Ability to adapt writing style to follow a brand style
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding in researching, reading and analysing written work and citing legitimate sources to inform new content
  • Pro-active in researching and seeking new content ideas
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills
  • Self-motivation, creativity and flexibility
  • Ability to work independently and take the initiative
  • Enthusiasm for the values of Trama Textiles (fair trade, female empowerment, protection of cultural heritage)
  • Ability to adapt to diverse cultural settings
  • Some knowledge of or links to potential, but is not necessary

Time Commitment

For the Creative Writer & PR Intern position we expect a minimum of one month’s commitment, and a minimum of 20 hours per week. 


Accommodation

We do not provide accommodation, but we can help you find an inexpensive place to stay. Quetzaltenango is a mid-sized city with plenty of affordable hostels and apartments. There are many shops and restaurants, bars and cafes, and it is a short bus ride away from many of the beautiful tourist sites in Los Altos (Lake Atitlán, Chichicastenango, Antigua, Huehuetenango, and many other destinations).


All positions are non-paid. We do not charge any fees for Internship positions.
