Over the course of 10 weeks, members will assist with planning the Community Relations Commission citywide EEO training to city agencies. Training is currently planned for two days to educate city agencies on Article 4 of the Baltimore City Code as well as another one day training on Baltimore City Police policies and procedures. Members will later coordinate with community partners to provide contributions on particular trainings/panels to underserved communities. Lastly, VISTAs will create an outreach program to increase awareness of the Displaced Workers’ Protection Law and the number of cases received by the Office of Equity and Civil Rights.

The goal of the Office of Equity and Civil Right’s Summer VISTA program is to work and engage the city’s Hispanic Community to enable greater resilience and access to resources for their employment as well as their everyday lives. In Baltimore City’s Highlandtown area and areas in Southeast Baltimore, there are many working-class immigrants from Mexico and Central America who are not counted in the census data. They work, pay federal taxes and many may still be living in poverty due to their immigration status. Our hope is that through the creation of outreach programs, our Civilian Review Board can attain a much greater reach within the community and collaborate with local partners to assist on training and educating vulnerable communities on their rights and available resources.
