Urban Media Arts (UMA) is seeking curious individuals with stories to tell who are interested in meeting new people, exploring Malden, and working with a small group to collaborate on a short film together. Applicants do not need to have any experience with film or media. The only requirement is to have an interest in working with teams and an interest in Malden and its community. This Spring-Fall opportunity will start May 20, 2023 at an orientation session and then continue through the summer with flexible hours - based on team schedule. Application is due April 20. Interested parties are encouraged to attend an information session March 11 at 4pm, at 145 Pleasant Street, Malden or March 16 at 7pm, via Zoom. Program details and to RSVP.
A Filmbuilder is a community member who works in a small group to co-create a short film answering the question “WHO IS MALDEN?” Small groups are made up of people representing different backgrounds, education, ethnicity, gender, age, interests, etc. – all connected by an interest in exploring Malden and being creative through film.
Filmbuilders work under the mentorship of professional filmmakers and UMA’s in-house media experts.

Malden is a Gateway City located north of Boston, accessible by the Orange Line at Oak Grove and Malden Center. As several news outfits report, Malden is experiencing a renaissance, with new development attracting a cross section of businesses and adding to the array of eating places. Malden is home to over 65,000 people, of whom 43% are born outside the United States. Malden has a gaming district and is becoming a thriving arts community, with an opera company, frequent exhibitions, live music, a shop selling fine art and handicrafts, and a Center for Arts and Culture in the planning stages. Focus on the environment is prevalent, with public/private initiatives working to enhance green spaces, conserve energy, increase clean energy, and restore various ecosystems - especially along the Malden River. The restaurants, shops, businesses, and residents showcase an international mix of people - making Malden a unique and diverse city with great potential for artistic, cultural, and social innovation.

Some sessions can be remote. Mostly, individuals will meat with their groups and explore Malden with phone, taking photos and videos. Editing can be done remotely.
